HOW TO MAINTAIN OR REGAIN PEACE AND JOY DURING TRIALS
From the NIV
You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in you. (Isaiah 26:3)
Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. (James 1:2-3)
Trials can leave us exhausted, distracted, and wondering where our peace and joy have gone. We may still love God deeply while struggling to quiet our thoughts or find a reason to smile. These moments do not mean our faith has failed. They remind us that we need to return to the One who sustains us.
Peace grows as we bring our troubled thoughts back to God. Joy takes root as we remember that our present circumstances cannot erase His love, His presence, or His promises. James does not ask us to enjoy suffering. He invites us to recognize that God can produce perseverance through what we would never have chosen.
To maintain or regain peace and joy, we can begin with small, faithful steps: pray honestly, dwell on Scripture, give thanks for one specific blessing, and make room for rest and support. We can address what needs our attention while surrendering what lies beyond our control. Sometimes joy returns quietly, through a worship song, a caring conversation, or the strength to take another step.
We do not have to wait for the trial to end before experiencing God’s peace and joy within it. We can grieve and still have hope. We can feel weary and still trust Him. Today’s struggle does not cancel His faithfulness.
Heart Check: What concern keeps occupying our thoughts? Let us bring it to God, identify one faithful step we can take, and entrust the outcome to Him.
