The Military Refers to It as “Boots on the Ground”
From the NIV Bible:
“Then Jesus came to them and said, ‘All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.’” (Matthew 28:18-20)
The military uses the expression “boots on the ground” to describe troops physically present where a mission is being carried out. There comes a time when preparation must become action. In our walk with Christ, we can attend services, study Scripture, and discuss the needs around us, but Jesus also calls us to go. His commission requires our presence, participation, and obedience.
Just as a country sends its military, including its Marines or Army, to carry out a mission, we are sent by the Sovereign and Almighty God to fulfill His Great Commission. We are His “boots on the ground” for this spiritual mission, and we must never take that responsibility lightly. Our mission is to make disciples, helping people know Jesus and learn to obey His teachings. This may involve listening to a hurting neighbor, sharing the gospel with a coworker, mentoring a new believer, or serving a family in need. The mission field may begin right outside our front door.
Notice that Jesus establishes His authority before giving His instructions. We go under His authority, guided by His Word. Our work is critical, and we must remember the significance of modeling who we are as followers of Christ while serving in the field. Our words, attitudes, decisions, and treatment of others should reflect the King we represent. The people we encounter are people to love, never enemies to conquer. We represent Jesus through humility, compassion, truth, integrity, and patient service. Our conduct should support the message our mouths proclaim.
Jesus also promises His presence: “I am with you always.” We may feel unprepared, experience rejection, or wonder whether our efforts matter, yet we do not go alone. The One who sends us remains with us. Where is God calling you to put your faith into motion today? Lace up your boots, take the next faithful step, and trust Him as you go.
Something to Ponder! 🤔
Am I taking my assignment from God seriously, and does my conduct in the mission field reflect the Christ I proclaim?
