HANDING OVER OUR TRUE IDENTITY TO THE ENEMY
From the NIV
Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God. (John 1:12)
Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. (James 4:7)
Pray continually. (1 Thessalonians 5:17)
The enemy cannot change who God is, but he seeks to distort how we see ourselves before Him. Through shame, rejection, disappointment, and temptation, he encourages us to exchange God’s truth for a false identity. We begin saying, “We are worthless,” “We will never change,” or “We are nothing more than what happened to us.” Slowly, we allow those lies to shape how we live.
We hand the enemy influence over our lives when we allow his accusations to become our definition of ourselves. Our failures may require repentance, and our wounds may need care, but neither has the authority to determine our worth. In Christ, we are God’s children. We can acknowledge where we have fallen without surrendering to the lie that we can never rise again.
Even Jesus faced temptation that began with the words, “If you are the Son of God” (Matthew 4:3). He answered with Scripture. We, too, must return to what God has spoken when the enemy questions who we are and whose we are.
Prayer helps us remain grounded in God’s truth. When we pray without ceasing, we continually bring our thoughts, struggles, and identity before Him instead of allowing the enemy’s lies to take root. Through prayer, we remember that our strength, worth, and security come from God.
Let us examine the names we have been answering to. Rejected? Hopeless? Unlovable? Beyond redemption? Those labels do not express the fullness of our identity in Christ. Someone’s rejection does not cancel God’s love, and a painful chapter does not become our entire story.
We do not have to keep living under a false name. Let us submit ourselves to God, resist the enemy, pray continually, and allow His truth to shape our thoughts, choices, and relationships.
Heart Check: What lie about ourselves have we accepted? Let us bring it before God today and replace it with the truth of His Word.
